@Meluzinecka Wow, thanks a lot! It's very complicated as I see.

I got a bit of a hangover this morning, hence me typing away, hope you don't mind.
I don't teach, or study English, l just use it - but my kids still make fun of me and there are words I will never be able to say correctly - like crock pot and crackpot; one is slow cooker and the other one a nutcase or drugatic.
Americans tell me they like my accent but I would prefer not to have one, unlikely, I was too old when I moved to USA.

@Virginian Hi, I'm not sure I understand it well…but are you still living in USA? Where exactly? And you have your family there?

Yup, Northern Virginia, you could call it DC Metro area. We lived in Maryland from 1997 and moved to Virginia in 2002. We are near town called Warrenton, nice country area.
My family is here, my relatives in Prague, wife's family lives in Michigan.
Where do you live?

@zzuza That's quite a difficult question, it mostly depends on what type of learner you are, whether you are visual or auditory learner. I am mostly auditory learner, therefore, I watch TV shows and films, listen to songs in English and sometimes look for lyrics to see what was there and I did not catch it. It replaces living in another country for me, you know, the sort of contact with spoken language, even though it is just from computer. Plus if you want to learn some more difficult pieces of vocab, I definitely recommend making cards (cz on one side, en on the other) and then putting the word into sentences or try to use it as a part of translation. Otherwise there is not much to recommend, I would generally say that the problem is the memory itself, some people remember even complex vocabulary very fast and some people need time. Some time ago I was battling with word „repercussion“ this way, only time helped ![]()
Otherwise I think that motivation is very important as well. When my students learn only for themselves, because they decided they might need it in future, they usually do not do homework so carefully and so on. On the other hand, if there is a deadline, they work like crazy
I started learning another language this January, not only because I want to but there is also a burning deadline in April when I am going to Spain for a week. I am learning like crazy to be able to understand and say at least a little bit ![]()

@Virginian So you're living there almost twenty years, aren't you? Why have you moved there? Becouse of your wife or work…? Do you visit your relatives in Prague?
I live in Brno.

@Meluzinecka Thank you. You're right that motivation is very important. When I was going to pass my CAE exam, I was reading books, watching movies etc. But then I've lost my motivation… I was using my English at work but there was no need for improvement. But now I've realized that I am going to forget a lot ![]()
And what about your Spanish, are you studying on your own or do you have a tutor?

@zzuza I have a tutor, a student from my city comes to my lecture room and teaches me for a very good price. Personally, I believe that the books „pro samouky“ are a very good business on gullible people who really want to learn it, but if you really want to learn the language from the beginning a be very good at it, you should have a tutor who can correct your mistakes, help with pronunciation and provide you feedback that a book just cannot
Furthermore, I think that lessons one to one are really the only way to go. You get all of your questions answered and you focus on what you need to, not on what the group needs. To be honest, I still feel like a total idiot when my teacher speaks to me in Spanish and I am like: „Ehm…uhm…whaaat?“
I am still in the process of learning new vocabulary and creating short sentences but I really enjoy it…beside the feeling like an idiot of course

Almost 20 years, yes. I moved to States because of my wife, I would never leave Prague on my own. I guess it was good move and whatnot, but I get homesick every so often. Moving back is out of a question, with mortgage and kids in school and overall roots we established here in VA.
Not complaining, mind you, just a small talk ![]()

She is good, I could never understand the time thingy in English. More British than American anyway.
Funny thing is, in real world, the language is far from correct. Quoting:
I didn't do nothing of that kind
They easily smack together two or three negatives in the same sentence.
